How To Decode Produce Stickers

Have you ever wondered what the number on the little produce sticker means? It can tell you some useful information.

  • A four digit number means it was conventionally grown.
  • A five digit number beginning with a  9 means it's organic.
  • A five digit number starting with an 8 means it was genetically modified.  Run far far away!

  6. Genetically modified orgnisms are not something to be scared of. It is up to everyone to chose what to eat, but do your research. Genetically modifying a crop means inserting a part of a gene (from another plant) into the plant of interest. If you eat a non-GMO vegetable, the genetic material will not magically incorporate itself into your system, the same way it won't if you eat a GMO. Using pesticides and chemicals is something completely different from being genetically modified. There has been no conclusive evidence that GMO's are hazardous to one's health. In fact, golden rice is only one example of how GMO's save lives. Golden rice helps fight vitamin A deficiency, which causes blindness in a estimated 250 000 - 500 000 children a year.

Otherwise, your blog has a lot of useful information. Thank you.

  7. Dear Anonymous,

While I am not experienced in the field of molecular biology, I have been cooking for a while now. With time i have come to realized that intent does play a role in cause and effect. Whether we look at the placebo effect or great chefs. The placebo effect shows that our mental intent can manifest in the material world. So if the intent of GMO products is to be quantitative that's what it will be. Two objects can not occupy the same space at the same time. Ergo lack of qualitative properties.
